The total geographical area of Gujarat is 196024 sq. Km, out of which 18961.69 sq. Km (9.67%) area has been declared as forest area. The state has varied geographical and eco-climatic conditions, ranging from hot alkaline sand deserts to humid mountainous areas, from the sea to the high mountains, resulting in a wide variety of forests. It is because of these factors that the state has been blessed with a rich and invaluable heritage of natural resources and beauty. Gujarat is rich in diversity of various species of flora, colonies and ecosystems. Gujarat alone has the diversity of 13% of the country's various species of plants. Gujarat alone has the largest population of Asian lions and wild donkeys in the world. Out of the total ecosystem of the country, in terms of animal biodiversity, 14% fish, 18% reptiles, 37% birds and 25% mammal population is in Gujarat alone. The President and the main responsibility of the Forest Department of Gujarat is to protect, conserve and develop the wildlife and forest area.
