A major Hindu festival celebrated in India is Dussehra, which comes after the end of Navratri. According to Gujarati Panchang, Sud Dasam day of Aso month is VijayaDashami (Dashera). This festival is celebrated in honor of Lord Ramachandraji's victory over King Ravana of Lanka, hence its other name Vijaya Dashami.

The festival of Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India. Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja in the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India. which is the festival of Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. In northern and western states this festival is called Dussehra. In these regions, it marks the end of "Ramlila" and commemorates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.



According to the Puranas, when the gods and people rebelled against Mahishasura's oppression and terror, Maa Durga fought with him for nine days and killed him on the tenth day. That day is celebrated as Dussehra. So on this day Lord Rama also killed Ravana and freed Sita from his possession. Thus the festival of Dussehra symbolizes the victory of Dharma over Adharma, Sad over Asad, hence this day is also known as Vijayadashami. This day is considered extremely auspicious and auspicious deeds can be done on this day without observing any Muhurta. Preparations to welcome Diwali, the biggest festival of Hinduism, also begin from Vijayadashami.




Significance of Dussehra: According to Puranic beliefs (Significance of Dussehra), Ravana kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Shriram. Due to which a deadly war took place between them. The demon king Ravana became indestructible because of the nectar in his navel. But after many circumstances and events, Rama succeeds in killing Ravana by shooting an arrow through his navel. Since ancient times, this day has been celebrated as Dussehra on the 10th day of the Ashwin month of the Hindu calendar. The people of India celebrate Dussehra in honor of the victory of "good over evil" and "truth over falsehood". Devotees in eastern parts of India also celebrate this day as the end of Durga Puja which begins with the Navratri festival.

Dussehra comes after the Navratri festival is over. According to the Gujarati Panchang, Dussehra falls on the tenth day of Aso month. The festival is celebrated in honor of Lord Ramachandra's victory over the Lankan king Ravana, hence its other name Vijaya Dashami. Different parts of India have different celebrations on the festival day of Dussehra. The southern, eastern and northeastern states of India celebrate Vijaya Dashami, the festival of Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. In northern and western states this festival is called Dussehra. "Ramlila" commemorates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana. On the day of Dussehra, people celebrate the victory of religion over adharma by burning Ravana. The messages of greetings start pouring in from morning itself.
