➜ The qualification for sitting for the entrance examination of Navodaya Vidyalaya is as follows.
- The student should be studying in standard 8 of any government recognized school.
- He should be between 6-12 years of age.
- For rural conservation, Std. 6, 7 and 8 should be studied from a government recognized rural area school.
- Must be taking this exam for the first time.
The brightest students in these schools are recruited through nationwide entrance examinations which are conducted by CBSE in each district and they are given admission in Std. Until 12, these examinations were conducted by NCERT. These exams are primarily optional and mostly non-literal. These examination papers are prepared keeping in view the abilities of the rural students.
Now admission is also given in 9th and 11th standard. This admission is also given through optional and topical examination (on English, Mathematics, Science and Sociology subject). This interim admission comes to fill the vacancy left by the alumni dropping out of school.
The Navodaya Vidyalaya, first established in 1918, was the brainchild of the then "Minister of Human Resource Development" Shri PV Narasimha Rao (who later became the Prime Minister of India). Formerly known as Navodaya Vidyalaya, these institutions were renamed as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. There are more than 50 JN schools all over India. Shri Rajiv Gandhi dreamed of opening a Navodaya Vidyalaya in every district. Every student is given free education in these schools. Students in these schools are recruited through nationwide entrance examinations. This examination is conducted by district.
Navodaya Vidyalaya is managed by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. It is a self-governing body under the supervision of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Union Minister of the Ministry of Human Resource Development is the Chairperson of this Committee. The Union Minister of State is its Vice-Chairperson. The committee is co-chaired by the Finance Committee and the Educational-Advisory Committee.
The committee has 8 divisions and for their smooth management there is a divisional office of each division. These offices are in different states. Each school has a school advisory committee and a school management committee to oversee. The District Magistrate (according to the concerned district) is the Chairman of the School Committee. Local scholars and public activists are members of this school committee. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is headquartered in New Delhi.
