First Vice President of India and Second President of India Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour. History India's first Vice President and the nation's second President Dr. Teacher's Day is celebrated on Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan's birthday. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a respected educationist. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher and teacher. He was the first person to rise from the post of teacher to the presidency. He once said – “I am a teacher first, and then the President.” In 1952, he was selected as the President of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan was awarded several British and Indian titles for his service. He was honored with Bharat Ratna in 1954. In 1975, Oxford University awarded him the Templeton Award. He donated all the prize money to the university.
When he became the President of India, his friends and students showed enthusiasm to celebrate his birthday. However, Radhakrishnan suggested celebrating his birthday as Teacher's Day. Well, since then his birthday is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India.
